The Airtec Motorsport Secondary Intercooler Kit for the Ford Focus Mk4 ST is an additional intercooler designed for track use and sporty street use, developed at the Airtec headquarters in the United Kingdom.
In the upper grille section of the Focus Mk4, space is limited by the intake system and air ducting, making a full-height front-mount intercooler impossible. Airtec therefore sought a way to further improve cooling and lower the intake air temperature without sawing or cutting work on the car.
The solution is a second intercooler that is mounted under the car behind the underbody panel and is supplied with fresh air via an air duct. By incorporating this intercooler in place of a section of piping, the total volume of the unit increases significantly without affecting the original or the Airtec-upgraded intercooler.
In back-to-back road tests over eight consecutive runs, the improved heat dissipation by 41% and became the intake temperature halved (from an average of 120.7 to 60.0 degrees). Measurements of the intercooler exhaust temperature showed a peak drop of 36.7 degrees, or a reduction of 76.4%, with an average decrease of 72.5% over four consecutive runs.
The kit fits neatly behind the base plate and can be easily returned to the standard position. The comprehensive mounting kit includes silicone hoses from Pro Hoses with all necessary mounting materials and a step-by-step assembly manual.
