What can you tune on your car?

Tuning can make your car faster, sleeker, and more unique – but there are rules. In the Netherlands, you are allowed  to modify , as long as it  's safe ,  doesn't exceed roadworthiness standards  , and you report your modifications  to the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and your insurer  if necessary.

In short: tuning is allowed, but not everything and not without limits.

What can you tune?

✔️  Software (chip tuning)
Chip tuning is permitted, provided that emission standards and safety requirements are not exceeded. You are required to report this to your insurer and, in the case of significant increases in power, sometimes also to the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority).

✔️  Intake and exhaust systems
Sports air filters and performance exhausts are permitted, as long as they  remain within the noise limits  and do not trigger error codes.

✔️  Rims and tires
As long as the dimensions remain within the margins and the wheels do not protrude beyond the bodywork, you may modify them.

✔️  Lighting (limited)
LED lighting is permitted if it is type-approved. Colored or flashing exterior lighting is prohibited.

✔️  Suspension and ride height:
Coilovers or lowering springs are permitted as long as the car remains safe: sufficient ground clearance, the correct ride height, and a stable wheelbase are required. The car must be able to drive over speed bumps without any problems.

✔️  Body and interior
Wraps, spoilers, sport seats or custom steering wheels are allowed, as long as they do not affect visibility or safety.

What are you not allowed to tune (or only with restrictions)?

Removing the catalytic converter, particulate filter, or EGR
is prohibited and will result in a failed vehicle inspection. Software that disables these systems is also illegal.

  Exhausts that are too loud
A sporty sound is allowed, but the exhaust system must remain within the legal sound limits.

  Bright or colored lighting
Blue, red or flashing front lighting is only permitted for emergency services.

License plate and speed masking systems
Folding license plates, speed camera tape or jammer equipment are prohibited.

Do you have to report tuning?

Yes,  always with your insurer . For major technical modifications—such as engine power, chassis modifications, or engine swaps—also with the  RDW (Netherlands ). Failure to do so may result in problems with damage, inspections, or police checks.
