Does chip tuning affect insurance?

The short answer:  yes, chip tuning can affect your car insurance . As soon as you modify the engine power, your car will no longer meet the original factory specifications – and that can affect your policy, premium, and coverage.

Why does chip tuning matter to insurers?

Insurers calculate their premiums based on manufacturer specifications such as power, weight, and usage. When you chip a car, the power output and sometimes driving behavior also change. For the insurer, this means  increased risk , which can lead to:

  • Higher premium
  • Adjustments to the coverage
  • Loss of compensation  if tuning is not reported

In the worst case, an insurer may decide  not to pay out , especially if it turns out that the car has been tuned without notification or registration.

Are you obliged to report chip tuning?

Yes. In the Netherlands, you are legally required to  technical changes that affect performance or safety   uninsured or only partially insured  in the event of damage .

Does this also apply to stage 1 chip tuning?

Yes, even a relatively mild  stage 1 tuning  changes the engine management software. This might seem harmless to you, but an insurer considers any adjustment that  deviates from the factory settings  a modification. Therefore, it's wise to always report this, no matter how minor the adjustment may seem.
