What is a coil for?

A coil – also ignition coil It's an essential component of a gasoline vehicle's engine. Without a coil, there's no spark, and without a spark, there's no combustion. It may seem like a small part, but it plays a major role in keeping your engine running.

What exactly does a coil do?

The coil ensures that the low voltage from the battery (12V) is converted into a high voltage (up to 40,000 volts). This high voltage is necessary to create a spark plug strong spark to create, which ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder.

Each cylinder in your engine has its own spark plug, and in modern engines often their own own coil.

How does it work?

  1. The ECU (engine computer) sends a signal to the coil.

  2. The coil builds up a magnetic field.

  3. This field collapses and converts low voltage into high voltage.

  4. That voltage goes to the spark plug, which emits a spark.

  5. The combustion starts – and the engine delivers power.

This process happens several times per second per cylinder, and must precisely timed and reliable are.

What if the coil is not working properly?

A defective coil can lead to:

  • Poor engine running

  • Stuttering or holding back

  • Loss of power

  • Unburned fuel in the exhaust

  • Long-term engine damage

That is why it is important to use good quality ignition coils – especially with tuned engines or heavy loads.
